乍看「Handa's Surprise」的封面，很容易被忽視(我是說我啦！😂) ，所以我很晚才入手。單純就故事內容來看， 「動物」跟「水果」很適合大約一歲半開始的低幼，描述水果特色的形容詞也很棒，平常生活中很好使用；而故事延伸，就看小孩的年紀跟認知發展，可深可淺了，例如非洲(肯亞)生活、糧食問題等等。
📖 Handa's Surprise by Eileen Brone (毛毛蟲點讀版)
嫩薑這本喜歡自己點歌謠，或是朗誦來聽，所以大部分我都是跟著一起聽，比較少帶讀，偶而才會挑個幾頁一起聊天共讀一下。(下面的對話紀錄是慢慢累積來的)
Handa將七樣要送給她朋友Akeyo的水果放進籃子裡。
👩：「What are these seven fruits?」
👶：「Banana, orange, pineapple ...」
👩：「What's this?」
👶：「I don't know.」
👩：「Is it a pear? I am not sure. Handa will tell us.」
「Akeyo會感到驚喜的！」Handa心想，並出發前往Akeyo的村莊。「不知道她會最喜歡那樣水果呢？」
👩：「Which fruit do you like best?」
👶：「Mango」
👩：「Why?」
👶：「sweet and delicious!」
👩：「How about Akeyo?」
👩：「Who is this in the tree?」「The monkey is stealing the banana from the basket!」
還是聞起來香香甜甜的番石榴呢？
🔆 從這裡開始每出現一隻新的動物的同時，也會看到跟上一頁動物相關的訊息。例如在鴕鳥左邊，掉下來香蕉皮！
👩：「What's this?」指著香蕉皮
👶：「Banana」
👩：「Yeah, it's a banana peel from _____.」
👶：「Monkey!」
👩：「Monkey throws away the banana peel after he finishes eating it. That's not nice. What can we do with the banana peel?」
👶：「Bin it.」
成熟的紅芒果也不錯？
有著尖尖葉子的鳳梨會喜歡嗎？
🔆 長頸鹿旁邊可以看到大象剛剛要離開；講到「spiky-leaved」可以指一下鳳梨頭那邊。
那類似奶油口感的綠色鱷梨呢？
👩：「There is only one fruit left in the basket.」
👶：「Tangy是什麼啊？ 」
👩：「A tangy fruit tastes sour and also can be sweet, such as tangerines or oranges.」
👶：「And pineapple! 」
👩：「Yes! Pineapples.」
👩：「The basket is empty. No fruit for Akeyo! Handa hasn't noticed it.」我這裡都會用很驚訝的口氣在說！😂
👩：「The goat is pulling on the rope and the rope breaks. What happens when the goat runs into a tree?」「Yes! The tangerines fall into Handa's basket. Is the basket empty?」
👶：「No!」
👩：「It's full of _____.」
👶：「Full of tangerines!」
「哈囉，Akeyo！我給你帶來個驚喜唷～」
「橘子！我最喜歡的水果！」Akeyo說。「橘子！？真的是個驚喜！」
這兩頁動物跟水果是嫩薑最喜歡的部分，尤其水果除了發音之外，還有音階的效果(可參閱影片)。
⚙️ 延伸活動
---🧺 Balance the Basket：
共讀幾次之後，我拿了籃子/袋子給嫩薑，請他拿著：「You take the basket with your hands. But Handa puts the basket on the ____.」「Do you want to try putting the basket on your head?」我自己會先做一次給他看。「Look! I am balancing the basket on my head. It does not fall over!」
--- 🐒 Guess Who：
有兩種猜猜看可以玩「猜猜看是哪個動物」，「某個動物吃掉哪個水果」。第一個是描述動物特色，例如「This animal has four legs, big ears, a long trunk. It makes a trumpeting sound. What is it?」大一點的孩子，或是程度不錯的孩子也可以反過來練習描述給爸媽猜～
第二個和小孩玩記憶某個動物吃掉哪一個水果或反過來「Which fruit does elephant like?」「Giraffe takes _____ away.」有一次共讀，嫩薑在點最後一頁音效，我突然自言自語說「Which animal eats guava?」嫩薑就回答我說「Ostrich!」😌 才有了這個遊戲。
⚡️ 點讀效果
點封面是歌謠版本，點封底是朗誦；音效一般般，動物跟水果點讀會唸單字，人物有簡單對話。
「Handa's surprise」 裡有熱帶水果、野生動物(家裡有動物模型很好搭配)，以及一般繪本中比較少出現的非洲草原的場景和滿頁到處飛來飛去的昆蟲(我每次共讀都忍不住伸手去撥掉🤣)，這些畫面給予視覺異國風情的刺激，難怪同時列入吳敏蘭跟廖彩杏書單中；之後有機會再給嫩薑看看肯亞大草原、非洲大遷徙等等。最後共讀完可以一起看下面的動畫影片唷！
